Gilmer Dems Meet @ 6PM Today

Thursday, 2019 September 19 – Just a reminder, this special meeting today has the same time, 6 PM. Please ignore any errant postings that you might encounter stating we meet at 2 PM.

If you are planning on bringing food, then please make it light snacks and finger foods. See you at 6 PM this evening!

If ever in doubt, then please check the calendar on the website. Thanks.

Gilmer Dems Meet SEP 19

Guests at our meeting on September 19, 6:00 p.m., at Mountain Light Unitarian-Universalist Church, will be SCOTT HOGAN, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia, and JUSTIN PITTS, Organizing and Outreach Director of the DPG.

If you would like to bring a snack to share, please bring finger foods.
As mentioned in my last email, we will collect items for GILMER HIGH SCHOOL at the meeting.  The school has a program to provide for the needs of some students, particularly those who do not have access to food and facilities that helps them to stay healthy and ready to learn.

The attached flyer has information about foods needed.  Please buy from this list only.  In addition, students who do not have access to showers are enabled to use the gym showers, so towels and wash cloths would be appreciated.

Clothing items of particular need are shoes and socks for boys, all sizes, and yoga pants for girls.  These items should be purchased new for the students.  The school has enough jeans, so stick to the yoga pants.  I’m told these are what girls are wearing these days.

Thank you in advance for what I know will be your generosity in helping our school and community.

See you Thursday!
P.S.  We have a few Gilmer Dems T-Shirts left and will be selling them at a discount at the meeting.  Check it out and see if we have your size.

GCDC Update

2019.03.21 – Gilmer democrats had a great meeting tonight!  Here is some news shared at the meeting.

We need every Democrat to help with this terrible legislation!

The Georgia House has passed HB 481, the “Heartbeat Bill.”  It is now in the Senate and may be voted as soon as next week.

“Heartbeat Bills” are being introduced in many states as part of a right-wing strategy to advance anti-abortion legislation to the Supreme Court. With the recent appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, it has been widely theorized that laws such as these may be not be deemed unconstitutional, restricting abortion access in many states and thus making Roe v. Wade obsolete.

A similar bill has been struck down in Iowa but we can’t be sure other courts will do the same.

According to HB 481:

❌ Abortions would be banned after 6 weeks (before most women even know they’re pregnant) – and potentially threaten Roe vs. Wade.
❌ If a woman is raped and becomes pregnant, she must file a police report to get the care she needs.  (Think of a young teen having been raped by a stepfather, for example!)
❌ A white male legislator is given more power over a pregnant woman’s body than she, herself, has.

If HB 481 passes the Senate, it will make Georgia the most dangerous state to be a woman in America – period. Contact your senator RIGHT NOW to tell them to stop the ban.

If you do not act, who will?

State Democratic Party elections

State Party elections were held on January 26, and we have new State officers.  Josh McCall is now our District Coordinator, having been elected to replace David Robinson.

Legislation Monitoring

Are you interested in monitoring legislation in Georgia or the U.S. Congress?  If so, let us know.  We are looking for someone to sign up for to monitor Georgia State House bills and let us know what is going on at our monthly meetings.  The U.S. Congress’ bills also can be monitored online through the Federal Register.  If you would like to help, we need you!

Monthly Gilmer Democrat Meetings

The Gilmer County Democratic Committee has recommended new activities for our meetings.  At every meeting:

1.       An issue of timely political importance will be discussed, and action will be facilitated by making pre-addressed postcards available to all attendees.  We are pleased to announce that the first of these discussions will be led by Jack Neumeyer at the April meeting on the subject of immigration.

2.      We will be appointing individuals to make a presentation at each meeting about a candidate for President.  This will enable us to get to know about the candidates’ policies and proposal for action if they become President.  Thank Beth Williams, who will make the April presentation about Kamala Harris, and Terry Woehr who will tell us about Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

3.      We will continue to meet at Mountain Light Unitarian-Universalist Church whenever possible.

4.      Instead of using money for food that could be used to support Democratic candidates, future meetings will be “potluck.”

Melba Gandy
Chair, Gilmer County Democratic Committee

Gilmer Dems Barbecue

Buy a $1 raffle ticket at our Gilmer Democrats’ barbecue party on Thursday, November 15, at 5:30 p.m. This rocker and several other great prizes will be raffled.
Your Democratic Committee is providing beverages and the barbecue, both beef and pork, smoked by award-winning Barbecue Chef Rick Day.  Guests are supplying the fixin’s.
Respond to this message to let us know if you will be there and what you will bring.  So far, folks have agreed to bring salad, pickles, barbecue sauce, cole slaw, and dessert.  We still need buns and ice, and can use some chips, potato salad, and anything else that tickles your taste buds.
Please let us know by Tuesday evening so we can be ready for a bang-up good Democratic parteeeeee!!!
See you there.
