Prospective Candidate Training

The 9th congressional District has some great
Democratic Leaders.
Please consider running for a local office or for the Georgia Legislature.  If you cannot, please send this to any Democrat that you think might consider running.

Just in case you forgot!

YES, the start-up meeting our Gilmer Democrats Blue Communication project is

MONDAY, JANUARY 13, AT 5:00 P.M. — Gilmer Democrats’ Office in the Parkway Professional Building. It is the two-story brick structure at the intersection of Highway 515 and First Avenue in East Ellijay, behind the Conoco Station.

Enter the building through the door on the left as you face the building. Go up the stairs and we’re at the top on the right.

As you know, this project involves posting on social media every day, educating voters about how government decisions affect their lives and simultaneously informing them about who Democrats are and what we believe.

The agenda will include information about why we are pursuing this project, how we will approach it, who will be posting, and a schedule of posts. We hope also to decide on a graphic image to identify our posts, and will be asking for your thoughts about it and hoping for consensus. There will be many other decisions to be made as we proceed, and input from everyone will be critical to success.

This is probably the biggest project we have undertaken — and the one with the greatest potential for an impact on our community.

Bring your thoughts, suggestions, and ideas to share and discuss.

From the Chair

Gilmer Dems are busy in this new year!  Help us turn Georgia blue as we head into the election season.

TOMORROW, THURSDAY, JANUARY 9 – GILMER DEMS’ MONTHLY MEETING, 6:00 P.M. at Mountain Light Unitarian-Universalist Church

Pot Luck – bring a dish to share.  We will be discussing activities relative to the 2020 elections and a bit about what we can do to help regain the U.S. Senate.

Saturday, January 11 — Gilmer Dems are hosting the 9th District Democratic County Committee chairs at our office in Ellijay.  We will address county activities and ethical issues related to the upcoming election and candidates.

Monday, January 13 — We will meet at 5:00 p.m. at the office to roll out the Democratic branding and voter education project.  We need people to join us and help in crafting and posting on social media short messages that will spread the word about who Dems are and how Dem policies have improved lives.  If you want to help just show up at 5:00 on Monday.  If you have questions, respond to this e-mail.

Thursday, February 19, 6:00 p.m. — Gilmer Dems will meet with Gilmer County election officials, including Probate judge Scott Chastain, to try out the new voting machines.  We will also learn the qualifications of and procedures for becoming poll workers and watchers.  If you are interested in helping at the polls, put it on your calendar.  The location will be announced well before the date.

Late February/early March — If we can raise enough money, we want to send a first-class mailing to all Democrats and non-partisans in the County.  The mailing will serve 3 purposes:  (1) to invite everyone to the Candidate Forum on March 21; (2) to let everyone know that the only guaranteed safe vote is a hand-marked, paper ballot and to send them an application for an absentee ballot; and (3) to get returns from the Post Office to “clean” our mailing list.  Cost of the mailing will be just under $800 but we think it will be worth it and save us postage in making future mailings.

Saturday, March 21 — Come to Gilmer Dems’ Candidate Forum at the Gilmer Arts Playhouse for lunch and an opportunity to meet and talk with candidates for U.S. congressional and Senate seats and Georgia State offices.  You will get an invitation.  There will be a nominal charge for lunch.

Last, but not least, we are asking for donations.  All the things we do cost money and income in 2019 did not cover expenses.  Please donate generously when you come to meetings or mail a check to Gilmer Dems, 36 Mulberry Street, Suite 5, East Ellijay, GA 30540.  It will be greatly appreciated and well used!
