Mueller Press Conference 2019 MAY 29

  • In his press conference today, Mueller contradicted Trump and his Republican allies on his claim of “total exoneration” and his denial of Russia’s election interference.

  • Mueller made clear that if the special counsel’s office had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, then they would have said so.

    • Mueller also stated that his team operated under DOJ guidelines that a sitting president could not be indicted, and so they did not make a determination as to whether Trump committed a crime.

    • Barr previously claimed that the OLC opinion was not the reason Mueller didn’t find a crime. Now we know that wasn’t just spin — it was a flat-out lie.

  • Mueller concluded by saying that there were multiple, systemic efforts to interfere in our election, and those efforts deserve the attention of every American.

    • Despite growing intelligence warnings that Russia will interfere in the 2020 election, Trump has repeatedly downplayed Russia’s extensive election interference campaign, and his White House has hampered efforts to protect our upcoming elections.

  • It is clear that Trump, Barr, and the rest of his cronies have been trying to cover up the special counsel’s findings, even if that means lying to the American people or obstructing congressional investigations.

  • It is Congress’s constitutional duty to conduct oversight as an equal branch of government, and Mueller’s statements today make their investigations all the more important.

    • Republicans in Congress must also join Democrats in working to protect our elections.
