DNC News of the Day 2019 APR 23

2020 Census

  • The census is a constitutionally-mandated count of all U.S. residents, not a political tool for Donald Trump to push his agenda and disempower Latinos and other people of color.

  • Adding a citizenship question to the census is an obvious attempt to keep immigrant communities–including both citizens and non-citizens–from having proper representation.

    • Trump and Republicans are all but guaranteeing an inaccurate count that will protect gerrymandering and jeopardize critical resources for communities across the country.

    • The Trump administration’s plan violates the constitutional mandate that we count the U.S. population accurately.

  • The way that the Trump administration added the citizenship question to the census also violated federal law–a fact Wilbur Ross then tried to cover up.

    • Kris Kobach and Steve Bannon pitched Ross on adding a citizenship question, and likely did so out of “discriminatory animus,” facts Ross deliberately misled Congress about.

  • The results of a properly performed census are incredibly valuable to communities across America, who depend on an accurate count both for their own planning and to receive their fair share of nearly $900 billion in federal health, education, and other funding.

  • We believe the Census Bureau should have the resources needed to prepare for and conduct a cost-effective, complete and accurate census, as well as improve counting segments of the population that are historically and persistently undercounted.

    • This means communities of color, immigrants, LGBT people, young children, those with disabilities, and rural and low-income populations.

  • We can’t stress just how important it is that the census is conducted by the book. The data coming out of this next census will be used as part of the redistricting process.

Trump Sues To Keep Taxes Secret

  • Trump and his businesses filed a lawsuit against House Oversight Committee chair Elijah Cummings and his own accounting firm to prevent the firm from complying with a congressional subpoena of financial records.

  • Trump’s lawyers argued in court documents that congressional oversight of the president is illegitimate if it does not advance a legislative agenda.

  • Let’s be clear: It is the House’s constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the president, and House Democrats have absolute legal authority to request Trump’s financial records.

Trump’s Taxes

Background: Today is the second deadline for the IRS to turn over Trump’s tax returns.

  • After Trump’s Treasury Department refused to meet House Democrats’ original deadline to release six years of Trump’s personal and business tax returns from the IRS, the House Ways and Means Committee issued another request demanding Trump’s returns by April 23.

    • Trump’s legal team has already responded with a second letter to the Treasury Department, pressuring the IRS not to release Trump’s returns.

    • Despite Trump and his administration’s lies, the law is crystal clear: the House Ways and Means Committee has the authority to request Trump’s taxes. There is no room for ambiguity or interpretation.

  • Any attempt to block the release of Trump’s tax returns is an unprecedented step that sets up a constitutional challenge. What is Trump trying to hide?

  • We already know that Trump has a long history of dodging taxes and committing fraud, including using shady tactics to reduce his tax bill and avoid tens of millions of dollars in estate taxes.

    • Trump has habitually provided false, flawed, and incomplete information to lenders, investors, and journalists about his finances. Or to put it another way: He’s lied. A lot.

  • Americans deserve to know how Trump’s financial interests affect how he governs. Trump promised on the campaign trail that he’d release his returns. And a majority still want him to release them.

  • For two years, Republicans refused to provide any oversight on Trump or his administration. Americans overwhelmingly voted for Democrats in the midterm elections, in part because they wanted to provide a check on the president.

    • The American people deserve to know what Trump is hiding, and Democrats are going to find out.

House Investigations

  • House Democrats subpoenaed former White House counsel Don McGahn to testify about his involvement in Trump’s attempted obstruction of justice.

    • McGahn is a critical witness and saw firsthand Trump’s attacks on the rule of law, and his attempts to cover up those actions with lies.

  • Democrats are also investigating the White House’s ignorance of U.S. national security in favor of convenience and nepotism, which included the overturning of at least 25 security clearance denials for Trump administration officials.

    • Trump himself personally intervened to overturn the denial of a clearance for Jared Kushner by career security professionals who raised concerns about potential foreign influence and his business ties.

    • The White House made clear they do not intend to cooperate with House investigators looking into this threat to our national security, and yesterday instructed the former head of the White House Personnel Security Office not to comply with a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee.

  • For two years, Republicans refused to provide any oversight on Trump or his administration. Americans overwhelmingly voted for Democrats in the midterm elections, in part because they wanted to provide a check on the president.

  • House Democrats are performing their constitutional duty, and fulfilling the will of the voters, by providing oversight and holding hearings to investigate the president and his administration.

  • While Trump wants to paint investigations as a partisan attack against him, that simply isn’t true.

    • Congress has a role to play in credible investigations into almost everything Trump has run over the past three decades, which have been taken up by multiple state and federal law enforcement agencies.

  • In addition to investigating Trump and his administration’s corruption, Democrats are also investigating his harmful policies, like his family separation policy, and holding hearings on how to improve the lives of Americans across the country through policies addressing climate change, gun violence, and access to affordable health care.

  • Democrats will never stop fighting for the American people, and will continue to provide oversight and hold this president accountable.

Democratic Party Agenda

  • Voters overwhelmingly rejected the Republican agenda that did nothing for them and failed to deliver for middle-class families.

  • The House of Representatives voted to reauthorize and expand the Violence Against Women Act.

  • Democrats are also working on legislative solutions to protect people with pre-existing conditions and lower health care costs.

    • House and Senate Democrats voted to condemn Trump’s decision to support a lawsuit to overturn the entire ACA.

  • After making historic gains in the House, Democrats immediately got to work for the people and already passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act.

    • The bill includes provisions to strengthen our election systems and make it easier, not harder, for people to vote.

    • The bill will also reduce the role of money in politics and restore transparency, accountability and unity to government.

    • The White House has threatened to veto, and McConnell has already refused to take up this bold, transformative legislation that puts the power back in the hands of the people and cleans up the corruption in Washington.

  • Here’s some of what Democrats else have done already to get to work for the people:

    • House and Senate Democrats introduced the Equality Act, which would amend the Civil Rights Act to add protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

    • House Democrats introduced legislation to provide permanent legal protection and a pathway to citizenship for millions of Dreamers.

    • The Democratic-led House passed legislation to require background checks for all gun sales.

    • House Democrats passed legislation to help close the gender pay gap.

    • Democrats introduced legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

    • Democrats launched an investigation into pharmaceutical companies raising prescription drug prices.

  • Democrats will work in a bipartisan way to deliver results on many other priorities:

    • We will fight for opportunity for everyone.

  • We will fight to lower the cost of prescription drugs.

  • We are going to fight for an infrastructure bill that addresses climate change and actually puts people to work.
