DNC Update: Net Neutrality

2018 MAY 10:  The Trump administration’s decision to repeal net neutrality rules hurts our economy and punishes the American people – who could face higher prices and less access to the web – all so big telecom companies can get richer.

The Trump administration has shown they don’t care about a free and open internet. They’re putting the wallets of big telecom companies and their lobbyists ahead of the best interests of the American people.

Democrats believe that an open internet is fundamental to free speech, innovation, and a competitive economy. The free flow of information shouldn’t be impeded by greedy gatekeepers.

The internet needs to remain a level playing field where the reach of one’s voice is determined by quality of ideas and not the whims of a handful of CEOs.

To protect consumers and the economy, Democrats filed a discharge petition in the Senate to reinstate net neutrality protections and successfully gathered the 50 votes needed to force a vote.

Democrats are also fighting to protect net neutrality across the country.   Several Democratic governors have signed a law or an executive order to guarantee net neutrality in their states, and attorneys generals from 22 states and D.C. have challenged the Trump administration’s decision to gut net neutrality rules.

We need strong guidelines designed to protect budding startups and businesses from large corporations that might want to stamp out their competition.

We need to fight to preserve the power a free and open internet gives the marginalized and underrepresented to organize and have their voices heard.
